On Farm Private LTE (4G and 5G) Connectivity Guide

Your plain-English Guide to understanding when a private mobile network makes sense, what it can do, and why proper planning matters.

Private LTE or 4G can give reliable, farm-wide coverage across the paddocks and work areas that matter most when it is properly engineered for the property, but it is not the cheapest option and should be chosen where the business case is strong.

Private 5G needs more user equipment (so your tractor modems etc.) to be 5G compatible however the available spectrum (radio waves) make its use best suited for very high-speed data transfer in a localized area – for example when a drone returns and needs to offload its high-resolution imagery.

How to Use This Guide

This mini book uses plain English, short sections and simple diagrams to explain the ideas clearly.

It is designed to help everyday farmers understand what Private LTE, 4G and 5G are, where they fit best, and how Connected Farms approaches agricultural network design and deployment.

1. One network across the farm

2. Why farmers use it

3. Where it fits best

4. Orchards and canopy

5. Coverage must be engineered

6. What the network can support

7. When private 4G makes sense

8. How a tower site is built
