No Signal, No Results: How Canterbury Ultrasound Stopped Losing Its Evenings to Paperwork
Carl Tairua, Owner Operator, Canterbury Ultrasound, New Zealand
Carl Tairua runs Canterbury Ultrasound, a contracting business based in South Canterbury providing pregnancy scanning of sheep, beef carcass scanning, and muscle scanning of rams for farmers across rural New Zealand. The job means moving between properties all day, often with no reliable signal once he's on-farm.

"Before, I'd lose hours every night catching up on paperwork because I couldn't get a signal on the farm," Tairua says. Results and records had to wait until he was back in range, pushing his admin into the evening on top of a full day's scanning.
Connected Farms' CommsXtend® gave him connectivity he could rely on while working, on the properties he visits. "Now, I can send everything straight away and be available to my clients, no matter where I am. It's made a huge difference for my business and my family life," he says.
Sending data as he leaves each property, rather than waiting until he's home, also speeds up turnaround for clients overseas - results reach the US and Australia faster than an evening batch-send ever could.

I’m Carl Tairua from Canterbury Ultrasound. We’re a contracting business based out of South Canterbury, travelling across rural New Zealand to provide beef carcass scanning, pregnancy scanning of sheep, and muscle scanning of rams. We’re all about helping farmers meet the expectations of the market.
One of the challenges we face as contractors is not having reliable coverage while making phone calls on the move. That can mean wasting a lot of time pulled over on the side of the road trying to talk to someone.
We have the CommsXtend Remote from Connected Farms, and the system enables us to make contact with clients. The Wi-Fi component also allows us to import and export data. As soon as we leave a property, that data can be sent before we leave, rather than having to wait until we get home.
The data side of the system is massive for us. Being able to send information to America and Australia, and have the turnaround happen much faster than if we sent it at night, makes a big difference.
When we get home, we’re able to be at home with the children and be part of day-to-day family life, without being stuck in front of a phone or computer for hours trying to catch up on the work we couldn’t do during the day.
