Understanding the 3G switch-off

Mobile network operators are phasing out their 3G networks to make way for newer technologies, such as 5G.

3G relies on WCDMA technology, 4G/LTE and 5G networks utilize OFDM, dividing the spectrum into smaller sub-bands for more efficient data transmission. As a result, 3G devices and infrastructure are incompatible with the newer networks.

This transition is driven by consumer demand for faster and more reliable connectivity. With fewer 3G-compatible devices in use, maintaining separate network infrastructures becomes financially unsustainable for MNOs.

This transition means that 3G services will no longer be available, impacting various sectors including agriculture. It's essential to be prepared for this change to avoid disruptions to your farming operations.

Impact on Farming Operations

The 3G switch-off poses significant challenges for farming operations reliant on connectivity. Devices, sensors and handsets that are supported solely on 3G services will cease to function, not being able to transmit and receive data.

Loss of 3G coverage could disrupt critical applications such as monitoring systems, remote control systems, and data transfer. Without alternative solutions in place, farms risk downtime and inefficiencies that could impact productivity and profitability.

Solutions 1

Is the migration feeling stressful? Connected Farms are here to help you find the right next-gen technologies that are suitable for your farming operations.

At Connected Farms, we offer reliable solutions to address the challenges posed by the 3G switch-off. Two of the most common solutions are as follows:
